The specific application of musculoskeletal screening guided dry needling to optimise dysfunctional single leg stance

Presented by Andrew Hutton
Andrew graduated from Sydney University in 1990 and is an APA Titled Sports Physiotherapist in private practice at Integrated Physiotherapy, Kingston Beach, Tasmania Australia. He has used acupuncture and dry needling in his management of a mainstream sporting and musculoskeletal clients since 1994 and currently has a special interest in complex musculoskeletal presentations, and has many years experience treating triathletes, paddlers and football injuries (predominantly rugby league and rugby union).

Overview: Single leg stance and its variants are commonly used clinical movement tests Deficiencies observed, allow us to determine the mechanical factors related to inefficient force transfer and load dumping resulting in tissue sensitivity and load related tissue pathology. Most dry needling approaches, focus on pain sensitivity rather than reassessment of motor performance.

Integrated Dry Needling however uses a process of movement range and tissue irritability screening which directs a highly individualised dry needling treatment using non “trigger point techniques”. The treatment process allows hypotheses formed during the assessment process to be tested allowing the practitioner to quickly and specifically evaluate whether deficiencies in the patients motor performance are due to awareness, neuro-motor control or apparent or actual tissue restriction.

Incorporating acupuncture meridians into back rehabilitation exercises and programs

Overview: We will go through a visual review of Thomas Myers “Anatomy Trains“ and compare how closely his theory follows the traditional tendo muscular meridians. Participants will then engage in a one hour beginners level back rehab class to experience how physio, anatomy trains and acupuncture knowledge can be combined in an educational exercise class.

The role of acupuncture in complex musculoskeletal pain presentations

Presented by Jonathan Wray
Jonathan Wray is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist (as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapy 2020). He is a director and principal physiotherapist at Next Wave Therapy in Fremantle, Western Australia and also works as a clinical tutor for the Master of Clinical Physiotherapy program at Curtin University. Jonathan has a special interest in treating headaches, complex neck and shoulder disorders using manual therapy, exercise and acupuncture.

Overview: There is a lot of discussion in the profession on the role of treatments such as acupuncture for the management of musculoskeletal presentations. Many are calling for the abandonment of so called “passive treatments” in favour of more active and psychologically informed strategies, which are said to better empower patients and are more cost effective. From a patient’s perspective, how does this relate to a lived experience?

Jonathan will be presenting on the role of acupuncture in complex musculoskeletal pain presentations combining contemporary pain science, issues with research and research methodologies as well as a patient case study to demonstrate the clinical utility of acupuncture as a treatment modality.

The role of the gut in chronic illness, with a focus on fibromyalgia

Presented by Mary Pentecost
Mary graduated in 1981 from Cumberland College. She worked in various hospitals and private practices until 2002 when she established her own practice in Berry, Whole Body Physiotherapy.
She has been studying acupuncture since 2003 when she completed Level 1 of the APA acupuncture course. Since then she has completed Levels 2 & 3, as well as numerous workshops. She has done occasionally tutoring and lectures and predominately uses acupuncture within her practice.
She has also been studying and practicing qigong for ten years.

Overview: Any discussion about chronic disease inevitably comes back to the GUT. “ All diseases begin in the gut”, a quote attributed to Hippocrates. Presentations are as diverse as people, difficult to box. Treatment requires time and a level of trust and ongoing contact.
We will look at fibromyalgia and some presentations. SP dampness and stagnation caused by that dampness are central. I will look at western definitions, underlying oriental medicine patterns and clinical considerations, skin, gut and different layers of the onion skin.
